'We Were Thrilled with the Way It Fell'

Posted May 10, 2014

EVP of Football Ops/GM John Elway and Head Coach John Fox discussed the Broncos' 2014 NFL Draft class Saturday evening.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Head Coach John Fox was pacing around the room.

The Broncos had traded from the end of the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft -- pick No. 131 -- to the middle of the fifth -- No. 156 overall. They had their eye on LSU linebacker Lamin Barrow, and all they could do was hope that he would still be waiting when the 25-pick drop elapsed.

"We were holding on a little bit there," Executive Vice President of Football Operations/General Manager John Elway smiled. "But fortunately Lamin made it to us there. That was the one – John made about 18 laps around the room – the most nervous time of the draft."

But Barrow was still available. As was first-round pick Bradley Roby, "a guy that we weren’t really expecting to get to us," according to Elway.

As those picks in particular demonstrated, Denver was able to grab the player it wanted in each round, even if it meant trading up to ensure it -- as was the case with second-round wide receiver Cody Latimer. And the club picked up an extra fifth-round pick in the 2015 draft in the process.

“We were thrilled with the way it fell," Elway said. "And to be able to – we picked up the fifth for next year. Even though we gave up the fourth to San Fran, that secured us Cody in the second round, which was very big, too. So we feel really good about how everything fell.”

In the end, the Broncos picked up Roby in the first, Latimer in the second, offensive lineman Michael Schofield in the third, Barrow in the fifth, offensive lineman Matt Paradis in the sixth and linebacker Corey Nelson in the seventh.

"Everybody on here we feel really good about," Fox said.

One thing that stood out to the head coach is a trait shared by each new Bronco.

"I think we increased our team speed," he said. "Really if you go through every position, even Michael Schofield ran very well. So they’re athletic, they’re guys that we hope that develop. But I think for sure right away we increased our team speed.”

Only time will tell how this year's Broncos draft class will be viewed. As Elway said, teams don't draft All-Pros, they develop them.

But at the close of the 2014 NFL Draft, the Broncos are happy with where they sit.

"We’re really pleased with it," Elway said. "It turned out nicely. We found some really good football players that are going to help us, so I’m excited about it.”
