DRC Clarifies Thoughts on His Future

Posted Jan 29, 2014

Cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie clarified his comments about possibly retiring.

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – A day after Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie made news by saying he could retire at the end of the season, the cornerback clarified his plans.

“They misunderstood what I was saying,” Rodgers-Cromartie explained. “What I was saying is that I got a one-year contract.  There are many times that I’ve seen a guy get a one-year deal, and it doesn’t pan out and that’s it.  So you have to think about life after football.  That motivates you to go out and play hard. I’m not thinking about retiring in terms of giving up.”

Earlier in the week, Rodgers-Cromartie said that his goal entering the NFL was to play in the league for five years.

This season is his sixth in the league, and having reached that goal, Rodgers-Cromartie said he’d consider his future once the season was over.

"I'm still thinking about it," he said on Monday. "You know, I had my fun in this league … (I've) got to weigh my options and see how I feel at the end of the season."

With the end of the season coming up and Rodgers-Cromartie set to become a free agent after signing a one-year contract with the Broncos this past offseason, his future is uncertain.

But that’s something that the cornerback is comfortable with, whichever direction it takes him.

“I think about (former NFL cornerback) Fabian Washington who is from Bradenton Fla., just like I am,” Rodgers-Cromartie said. “First-round (draft pick), one contract, got a one-year deal, never came back.  I work out with him, he’s still fast, still in his prime and I think, ‘That could be me.’  I think about guys like that.

“I am prepared for whatever,” he continued. “That’s what I mean about this being the last go-round.”
