Broncos Community Development Attends Summit

Posted Jul 17, 2014

A guest of the Western Dairy Association, Director of Community Development Kelly Woodward attended the GENYOUth 2014 Nutrition and Physical Activity Learning Connection Summit.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – Denver Broncos Director of Community Development Kelly Woodward attended the GENYOUth 2014 Nutrition and Physical Activity Learning Connection Summit this past week at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Woodward attended the summit as a guest of the Western Dairy Association (WDA), which the Broncos partner with for their Fuel Up to Play 60 community work. The WDA also brought Clayton Ellis, President of the Colorado Governor’s Council for Physical Fitness, Whitney Bell-Haggard of the American Heart Association, and other WDA staff, student advisors and student ambassadors.

“It was a wonderful experience to attend the summit and be among leaders tackling the issue of childhood obesity, health and nutrition in schools,” said Woodward.

The summit—presented by the NFL, National Dairy Council, SHAPE America, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, and United Way Metropolitan Dallas—brought together over 400 thought leaders with the goal of advancing the cause of improving health and nutrition in schools across the country.

The GENYOUth Foundation was created through a partnership between the NFL and the National Dairy Council, and runs its flagship program, Fuel Up to Play 60, which is the largest health and wellness program in schools reaching more than 38 million kids in over 73,000 schools nationwide.

Woodward attended workshops geared towards educating leaders about innovative and effective ways to increase nutrition and physical activity in schools to reduce childhood obesity. The summit also catered workshops and activities geared to the 150-200 youth leaders ages 12-18 in attendance, with over 40 states represented.

“It was inspiring to see kids from across the country in leadership roles on behalf of their schools, and learning new and exciting things they could take back to their local communities,” Woodward said.

Safety David Bruton also made the trip to the summit as part of his work as the WDA’s Fuel Up to Play 60 spokesperson. The 2013 Special Teams Captain spoke with student ambassadors about the importance of health and nutrition.

“Honestly I was thrilled about the invitation and that I could be out there with a bunch of kids and continue to promote the message of being healthy and active,” Bruton said.
