2012 NFL Draft Preview: Running Backs

Posted Apr 2, 2012

Take a closer look at some of the top prospects at running back as the 2012 NFL Draft approaches.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- In the weeks leading up to the 2012 NFL Draft, DenverBroncos.com is taking a look at the draft prospects position-by-position.

We will devote a week to each group, looking back at some of the Broncos' previous picks at the position and showcasing some of the top prospects through top stories, blogs and Broncos TV videos.

Next up: running backs.

Below you will find six of the top prospects at the running back position. Later in the week, we will profile another player to keep an eye on -- Alabama running back Trent Richardson.

TOP PROSPECTS AT THE POSITION:

TERRANCE GANAWAY
• POSITION: Running Back
• COLLEGE: Baylor
• HEIGHT: 6'0"
• WEIGHT: 239
On his 200-yard, 5-touchdown performance in the 2011 Alamo Bowl:
"Our offensive line played really well that game, so a lot of open holes, a lot of times we were just running downhill."
Player
RONNIE HILLMAN
Player • POSITION: Running Back
• COLLEGE: San Diego State
• HEIGHT: 5'9"
• WEIGHT: 200
On breaking Marshall Faulk's records at San Diego State:
"That’s college. It’s nice to have those things. But now I have a bigger scale. Now I have to chase his NFL records. I’ve talked to him a couple times. He said just get after it and do what I can do."
LaMICHAEL JAMES
• POSITION: Running Back
• COLLEGE: Oregon
• HEIGHT: 5'8"
• WEIGHT: 194
On his expectations for playing at the next level:
"I feel like I can do anything. I’ll be an all-around back. You don’t have to take me out on third down. I can run the ball, I can probably throw the ball, too. All special teams, and if they ask me to kick the field goal I can probably do that too."
Player
DOUG MARTIN
Player • POSITION: Running Back
• COLLEGE: Boise State
• HEIGHT: 5'9"
• WEIGHT: 223
On his running style:
"I have a lot of qualities similar to Ray Rice, and Maurice Jones-Drew. I definitely think my style is more of a violent style. I'm a violent runner, but elusive at the same time."
CHRIS POLK
Player • POSITION: Running Back
• COLLEGE: Washington
• HEIGHT: 5'11"
• WEIGHT: 215
On his strengths:
"I'm versatile. I can do it all. I can run, block, catch, all of that. It's just a matter of me executing my technique rather than relying on just the physical abilities and just staying mentally attuned to my technique and staying fundamentally sound."
DAVID WILSON
• POSITION: Running Back
• COLLEGE: Virginia Tech
• HEIGHT: 5'10"
• WEIGHT: 206
On whether he is comfortable returning kicks and/or punts in the NFL:
“My sophomore year, I had two key kick returns for touchdowns, last year I was a return man. Ever since I came to Tech I was a return man. Returned kicks in high school also. I’m very comfortable being back there catching kicks, and I think that’s an asset I bring because not all the backs in the draft return kicks.”
