2011 Game-By-Game: Week 1

Posted May 9, 2011

Take a closer look at the Broncos' Week 1 matchup against the Oakland Raiders.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Over the next few weeks, we'll take a look at the Broncos' 2011 schedule game-by-game, including a recap of what happened the last time the teams clashed, matchups to keep an eye on and more.

First up, Week 1's game against the Oakland Raiders at INVESCO Field at Mile High on Monday Night Football.

Week 1: vs. Oakland Raiders (Monday Night Football)
Opponent

• DATE: Monday, September 12
• TIME: 8:15 p.m. MDT
• LOCATION: INVESCO Field at Mile High
• TELEVISION: ESPN (National)
• OPP. 2010 RECORD: 8-8
• ALL-TIME VS. OPP.: 41-58-2

THE LAST TIME: The Raiders swept the Broncos in 2010, including Tim Tebow's first start in Week 15 in Oakland. The last time the Raiders and Broncos clashed at INVESCO Field at Mile High came in a Week 7 matchup that saw the Raiders put up a franchise-record 59 points. The Broncos turned the ball over on their first two offensive plays and trailed 21-0 before the offense had its third opportunity -- just six minutes into the game.

The largest offensive effort by a visiting team in INVESCO Field history resulted in a final score of 59-14.

"It needs to hurt so this won't happen again," Jason Hunter said. "We need to feel pain from this. It's definitely a hard lesson."

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: The Raiders went undefeated in the AFC West last season, but made a coaching change after missing the postseason for an eighth straight year. The Broncos have a new leader as well in Head Coach John Fox, so only one man can kick off his tenure with a win.

KEY MATCHUP: Oakland running back Darren McFadden vs. Denver's run defense
Last season at INVESCO, McFadden gained 165 yards on the ground and 31 more through the air, racking up four total touchdowns. With new pieces added to the defense, including first-round pick Von Miller and the return of Elvis Dumervil, look for the Broncos to try to squash the ground game before McFadden gets started.

NOTES: 2011 marks the 20th consecutive season the Broncos have played on Monday Night Football, extending the longest active streak in the league. It is the second-longest streak of its kind all-time...The last time the Broncos and Raiders squared off on MNF -- in 2008 -- Denver won 41-14...The Broncos open at home for the first time since 2004, and the game against the Raiders marks the first time since 2001 that the season opener has been at home and on Monday Night Football...With the exclusion of last year's Oakland sweep, the Broncos have won at least one game against the Raiders every season since 2003, including three sweeps of their own.
